General Tracking Information
We will be assisting hunters recover wounded deer during the upcoming 2022-2023 hunting season using a leashed tracking dog. Our dog is a long haired European standard dachshund named Arrow (bio in link below). Arrow is 4 years old and is entering his 4th season of tracking for the hunting community. He has a lot of successful tracks and solid experience under his belt and and we are looking forward to having our best season yet. We spend a lot of time training in the off season through the use of mock trails. Our mock trails consist mainly of hoof scent from the interdigital gland and very little blood. Arrow has continued to develop and mature over the off season and we are ready to go for this year. We want to help all of you with as many recoveries as possible.
I’m very excited to help you this upcoming season, but please keep in mind that I am a husband, father to five (yes five) young children, and a fellow hunter with a full-time job. We will not be able to go on every track, but we will sure try. If we are not able to help you, it will be because we have a more pressing priority at the time. I will always do my best to help, even if that is limited to connecting you to a network of other trackers or giving advice and encouragement over the phone.
Hunting and tracking is a family activity for us, so it is likely that at least one or more of my children will accompany me on the track. The safety and protection of my children is my responsibility and of the utmost importance, so clean language and ethical behavior are necessary for continuation of the track.
Our Goals
- Provide support to hunters that extends far beyond deer recovery. We aim to support you by focusing not only on finding your deer at the end of the track, but by focusing together on finding Him at the end of the track within our souls. Every track will begin with an earnest prayer for perspective, safety, and gratitude, regardless of the outcome.
- Recover your deer! We want you to find your deer. Some deer will not be recoverable for various reasons, but we will do our best to provide you with the peace of mind that you’ve acted honorably by giving your best effort to make the recovery.
- Promote the value of tracking dogs. We want to promote these dogs not only for recovering deer but as a great way to involve your family, especially your children, in hunting and the outdoors.
Questions I may ask over the phone:
I will ask you about the weapon you used and some specifics about your setup.
I will want to know the day and time the deer was shot, when you began tracking, and for how long and how far.
Where did you hit the deer and at what angle?
How much penetration occurred and did you find your arrow?
What did your arrow look like? What did your arrow smell like?
What kind of hair was at the impact site?
What did the blood look like, how much was there, and what was the pattern and placement?
How did the deer react when it was impacted by the arrow?
How bad are the coyotes in your area?
Do you have permission from the surrounding property owner(s) to recover the deer? If the deer enters a property where you don’t have permission, the track is over.
